Farmers union, Agri Limpopo, is calling on the government to put immediate actions in effect to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
This follows confirmation of four cases in the Thohoyandou, Vivo and Modimolle-Mookgophong areas.
Agri Limpopo’s Deidre Carter says the authorities must tighten border controls to prevent the disease from spreading.
Carter says these incursions place enormous pressure on all livestock farmers and rural communities.
“Limpopo cannot afford another foot and mouth outbreak therefore, immediate preventative action is essential. As organised agriculture, after the meeting that we had on Monday, there were some really good discussions and the call at this stage to the MEC and to government is that we need immediate strengthening of Limpopo’s provincial borders,” adds Carter.
