AfriForum warns of court action over Tshwane cleaning levy

Civil rights group AfriForum has warned it will return to court if the City of Tshwane fails to comply with a High Court order declaring the city’s R194.37 cleaning levy unlawful. The amount excludes VAT.

The Pretoria High Court ruled on Thursday that the implementation of the levy was illegal and invalid. The judgment requires the metro to reimburse all residents who were charged the levy on their municipal accounts.

AfriForum’s Arno Roodt says the ruling means that approximately R500 million must be returned to Tshwane residents.

“This means that there is about R500 million that will be taken out of the hands of the greedy City of Tshwane and back into the pockets of Tshwane residents. Currently, everyone that was levied with the city cleaning levy will receive a credit back onto their accounts,” said Roodt.

“The City of Tshwane needs to process this within the next cycle of accounting. So within the next month, that amount that was levied previously will be credited back into the accounts of Tshwane residents,” he added.
