Africa’s first water, sanitation conference kicks off in Johannesburg

The first Africa Water and Sanitation Technical Conference got under way today in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg.

It is set to be a groundbreaking event, addressing critical water and sanitation challenges while showcasing Africa-focused solutions and innovations.

The summit, which ends on Wednesday, has brought together all water and sanitation entities, including the Department of Water and Sanitation, municipalities and the country’s water boards.

Sandile Mkhize is the Chief Executive of Umgeni, Tugela Water Board. “The purpose of the dialogue is not to continue coming up with new plans – because we know what the challenges are that we are facing in South Africa – but we’re saying let’s press a reset button . The reset that will say, ‘Let’s stop what we are doing and then look at what it is that we can do, and do it better’  and put time frames and put resources, even if it means we have to pull expertise and knowledge so that we can be able to ensure that water problems are addressed.”
