African World Heritage Fund pledges to protect Africa’s heritage

The African World Heritage Fund says it will continue to ensure that the continent’s irreplaceable heritage is protected for future generations.

This, as Africa navigates rapid development, climate change, and global uncertainty.

UNESCO and the African Union founded the fund in 2006. Its aim is to address historic challenges, including the under-representation of African sites on the World Heritage List.

The fund’s Executive Director, Dr Albino Jopela says, “Apart from the great achievements, the fund has contributed to changing the landscape of world heritage at the global stage. One of the key challenges that we face remains the sustainable funding not only for heritage but also for the development agenda that’s anchored on Africa’s heritage. Another priority is how, then, do we mobilise African government and civil society to look at climate change and development pressures on heritage so that we don’t take the wrong paths so that when it comes to making the choices that are important, we choose social economic development but also take into account our very own heritage?”
