Ad Hoc Committee team’s safety is a collective responsibility: Ntuli

The African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip in Parliament Mdumiseni Ntuli says the safety of the members of the Ad Hoc Committee should be a collective responsibility, not solely that of the state.

He says its going to be difficult for the state to protect every public representative who may be under threat.

His comments follow a recent incident in which a member of the committee, probing allegations of political interference in the criminal justice system, was kidnapped and later released after paying a ransom.

Speaking to SABC News on the sidelines of the ANC’s National General Council, Ntuli urged the public to take on the responsibility of supporting public representatives.

Ntuli says, “We are part of this nation and we believe that the overwhelming majority of South Africans are honest, and genuine South Africans who will make whatever contribution that is possible for them to ensure that they also help us to remain vigilant and with them as well, working with us to ensure that we don’t get undermined by criminals, because like I’m saying, I think it’s going to be difficult for the state to protect each and every public representative who happen to be under threat because of their genuine contribution to the development of our country.”
