Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee Investigating allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi delivers opening address at Parliament, Cape Town on August 5, 2025.
The African National Congress (ANC) Chief Whip in Parliament, Mdumiseni Ntuli, has assured the public that proceedings by the parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of police corruption made by KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be conducted impartially.
This as concern mounts over the appointment of ANC MP Soviet Lekganyane as chair of the committee.
Opposition parties have criticised his appointment, citing potential bias due to the involvement of former governing party figures, including suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, in Mkhwanazi’s claims.
Ntuli says ANC members in the committee understand that their mandate is to serve the people of this country.
He says, “As the Chief Whip of the ANC and the members of the ANC who serve in that committee, we are quite determined to ensure that we deal with this issue for what it is and we have no intention whatsoever to protect anyone, including members of the ANC who may be implicated one way or the other.”
“Those members will have the responsibility to defend themselves and we have a responsibility, an abiding responsibility to defend the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and to represent South Africans who have elected the ANC in that parliament to the best of our ability,” Ntuli adds.
