Ad Hoc committee probing Mkhwanazi allegations to discuss terms of reference

Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee established to look into wide ranging allegations of threats to national security, will meet again on Friday to further discuss its terms of reference.

The Committee was established following explosive allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of serious corruption in the criminal justice system.

Among others, Mkhwanazi alleged that some of the most senior officials in the South African Police Service (SAPS) are involved in corruption, and that the Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, is associated with criminal syndicates.

Last week, the Committee sat for nearly 10 hours exploring the terms of reference.

Among others, the Committee concluded that Mkhwanazi will be the first witness to appear before it.

His testimony before the Committee may inform any additional persons that they may decide to call.

In the light of the high levels of danger surrounding whistle blowers, the Committee also concluded that it would assess risks involved when calling people to appear.

It is expected that the Committee will today finalise and adopt the terms of reference.
