South African actor Presley Chweneyagae has died at the age of 40. His death was confirmed today
Born on October 19, 1984, in Mafikeng, North West, Chweneyagae gained international recognition for his leading role in the 2005 film Tsotsi, which won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was 21 years old at the time.
Chweneyagae trained at institutions including the National School of the Arts, the Market Theatre Laboratory, and the Artist Proof Studio before launching his professional career.
His film and television credits include Moruti wa Tsotsi, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and iNumber Number. He was also known for his long-running role in the television drama The River from 2018 to 2023.
He was associated with Mzansi Magic as a long-standing ambassador and contributor to local storytelling and talent development. His contribution to South African film and television was widely recognised, and his work continues to be celebrated across the industry.
His family says they are on their way to Pretoria to his residence before they can give more details.
