ActionSA, DA take eThekwini Municipality to court over sewage crisis

ActionSA and the Democratic Alliance (DA) are taking legal action against the eThekwini Municipality in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

The two parties accuse the municipality of failing to repair sewage infrastructure, which they say has led to raw sewage leaking into rivers and the ocean.

The ongoing issue has resulted in high levels of E.coli in local waters, prompting the closure of several beaches in recent years.

ActionSA ready to take sewage battle to court:

ActionSA president Herman Mashaba says the decision to go to court followed ongoing challenges.

“I am happy that our party took this decision to follow up on this matter. We encountered lots of obstacles along the way, where other political parties that are today in government, who at the time were fighting with us to ensure that these beaches actually can be in a position where residents and the people of South Africa can come and enjoy these beaches. Unfortunately, they are now part of the problem, so we are looking forward to the engagements,” says Mashaba.
