Organisation advocating for the rights and protection of children has raised concerns over the viral video depicting a mother encouraging her four-year-old son to light up and smoke the drug mandrax.
The mother and two others aged between 28 and 36 have since been arrested and are now facing charges of child abuse.
Action Society Spokesperson Juanita Du Preez says the child, who has now been taken to a place of safety will need counselling and protection.
Du Preez says, “I hope it was a single occurrence, but it is such a traumatic experience that he will carry through his life if he does not get proper counselling and support.”
She says, “This was captured on video but we see so many places where children are exposed to things that they are not supposed to be exposed to at a very young age and it is unacceptable, and really does have a traumatic impact.”
