Action SA’s National Chairperson Michael Beaumont addresses the media outside the Johannesburg City Council on June 25, 2025.
Action SA’s National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont, says they will not defend Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero in a motion of no confidence.
The move is brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA).
The DA is also targeting Chief Whip Sthembiso Zungu, while Al Jama-ah is pushing for the removal of Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu.
The council has 270 seats, with 18 political parties represented.
The African National Congress (ANC) is a leading party with 91 seats but falls short of the requisite 136 to govern.
Speaking outside the City Chamber, Beaumont says, “We have conveyed to the ANC that we believe that the problem is Dada Morero and not the ANC. We are working with the ANC very well in the City of Tshwane, where we are in coalition.”
“The ANC has said to Action SA that ‘if we do not support them in this motion of no confidence, they will act against our speaker and abstain in that vote which in all probability means that Action SA is likely to lose our speaker in the City of Johannesburg today.’”
He adds, “That’s absolutely fine. We cannot vote in order to retain positions, but against the wishes of the residents of Johannesburg.”– Reporting by Kholo Tefo.
