Academic activities to resume on Monday at University of Free State

The University of Free State says academic activities will continue on Monday following their suspension amid student protests.

The QwaQwa campus was closed after damage to buildings on Monday following student protest over the phasing out of provisional registration.

The University of the Free State Executive Committee, Institutional Representative Council, and Campus Student Representative Councils of the three campuses reached an agreement on the implementation of the phasing out of provisional registration.

The university says the academic calendar has been amended to ensure the successful completion of the 2025 academic year.

Students who vacated the QwaQwa campus this week are expected to return on Wednesday and academic activities to resume on Thursday.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, six students were expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on charges of malicious damage to property and attempted arson after they allegedly attempted to petrol bomb a building on campus.

Meanwhile, the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape will resume teaching online from Monday following the recent violent unrest and destruction of property on its campuses.

Students have been calling for SRC elections and a change in university management, among other things.

Management says its top priority is the safety of staff and students while ensuring the 2025 academic year is protected.

A Recovery Plan has been presented to Senate and the Extended Management Team to guide the restoration of operations.

The university is also engaging with student representatives to address their concerns. Further discussions are planned with Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education next week.

Blended learning is expected to begin from the 27th of this month.
