AARTO rollout aims to curb high road fatalities

Road Traffic Infringement Authority (RTIA) says the looming roll-out of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences system (AARTO) to 69 municipalities across the country is an effort to curb the high number of road fatalities in the country.

The system will come into effect on December 1 this year.

This, after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the proclamation in August, officially gazetting the AARTO Act.

RTIA spokesperson Monde Mkalipi says, “Its main key intention is to really assist, to ensure that you reduce the number of fatalities that occur on our roads and above all, AARTO provides road users with a number of rights and options they can take advantage of, in terms of resolving their traffic infringements. By doing so, that is going to increase their compliance with traffic laws.”
