A transitioning facility for jailed children launched in the WC

The Department of Social Development in the Western Cape has launched what it says is the first of its kind transitioning facility for children who’ve been in conflict with the law.

The Fountain of Hope Intermediate Child and Youth Care Centre in Philippi is an attempt to close the gap for children who have been incarcerated for serious incidents, before being released back into communities.

Provincial Social Development Minister Jaco Londt says it is a Centre for young people who want to change.

“The path ahead should be one of continued support and opportunity. The Fountain of Hope Intermediate CYCC stands between secure care and community care-based centres.

It provides a structured yet nurturing environment, less restrictive than secure care, yet robust in its support mechanisms. It is a place for young people who have shown that they are ready for change but still need some guidance.”
