A protestor holds a placard at a march against human trafficking.
A 47-year-old man arrested on suspicion of human trafficking will appear in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Thursday.
The suspect, who is a foreign national, was arrested in the CBD on Tuesday after police intercepted a vehicle and rescued two teenage boys on Broad Street in the suburb of Mulbarton.
Eight other boys were found walking in the area half-naked.
An investigation is underway.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says, “The eight boys that they had met were actually ten; the other two were taken away, allegedly by a blue VW Jetta, which was heading toward the JHB CBD. The Metro Police called SAPS Mondeo as well as the DPCI and proceeded to follow up on the VW Jetta, which they successfully intercepted in Commissioner Street and rescued those and arrested the 47-year-old. They (the boys) are from one of the African countries and we are talking to embassies in order to confirm their originality.”
