Some young girls who are participants at the Kimberley Diamond Cup say the extreme sport of skating needs more girls to participate in it. At least 80 participants from five provinces were competing against each other for the coveted prize money of 100,000 at the Kimberley Diamond Cup skateboarding grand slam competition.
Some participants are also from SADC countries and the event is sponsored by the provincial department of Economic Development and Tourism.
Participants from different cities gathered here to showcase their incredible talent and skills. The provincial Department of Economic Development says these kind of events shine a spotlight on the province’s vibrant stakeboarding culture.
The ministry also has big plans for the skate plaza.
The department representative, Spho Mampe, says, “The intention of the department is to endure that this venue becomes a world venue for international events, which means that it must be a qualifying venue for Olympic sports and the KDC event. We want to make sure that it gets points from the world skate so that skaters throughout the world can come to skate here and gain points for the Olympic sport.”
Some young girls who are participating say the sport is quite challenging, but would encourage more girls to participate.
“It’s quite exciting to be part of the competition; only a handful of girls are here and would love to see more,” says Mmabatho Kekana.
The grand slams are eliminating processes for the ultimate grand event and one skaker from the SADC country, Noel Cossa, says he wants a piece from the pie.
“I am proud to be here and skate. I also want to see if I can win the grand prize,” says Noel Cossa.
The event also brings economic development to the province as the hospitality industry cashes in. The grand final event with participating provinces will take place from the 21st to 22nd of March.
