Gauteng Education under fire for non-payment of electricity

The Gauteng Education Department has come under fierce attack for failing to pay municipalities for electricity.

The non-payment has led to power being switched off at schools, leaving them vulnerable to burglaries, especially at night.

The department held a School Safety Imbizo in Ratanda, Heidelberg yesterday.

The aim was to afford parents, learners, education activists and law enforcement agencies a platform to share ideas on how best to improve safety in schools.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane says they have come up with a payment plan.

Chiloane says, “It’s simple, the Mayors must or the leadership or the councils or the municipalities must stop cutting our electricity, we’ll pay them. We’ve made an arrangement, like here, we made an arrangement. We’ve made arrangements with all Mayors and the councils and the city municipal managers. We’ve had that engagement.”- Additional reporting Tshepo Phagane.
