KZN floods
The Department of Cooperative Governance (CoGTA) in KwaZulu-Natal says there should have been more consideration when relocating the 2022 flood victims to Lamontville in the south of Durban.
This follows the deaths of six people after heavy rains and mudslides on Tuesday.

Last week, heavy rains triggered a mudslide in Adams Mission, in KwaMakhutha, also resulting in the deaths of six people.
CoGTA MEC in KwaZulu-Natal, Thulasizwe Buthelezi says, “The people who lost their lives were in a transit camp where they were moved to that camp after the 2022 floods. And in hindsight, after inspecting the camp yesterday, one can see that they were put in harm’s way.”
“They were never supposed to be relocated to such a place because it posed a significant danger on the bank of the canal. But when they were put there. There was no reasonable expectation that that area would one day flood. So, it’s a combination of factors. It’s human error but also coupled with climate change.”
