Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is prevented by washing hands often with soap and water.
Some parents are concerned that their children run the risk of getting infected at schools where learners have already been diagnosed with hand-foot-and-mouth disease in KwaZulu-Natal.
Yesterday, the provincial Health Department said 168 cases had been reported. They expressed concern over the rapid spread of the disease in the province.
In the last few days, infections have also been recorded in the Ugu, Umkhanyakhude and King Cetshwayo districts.
Parent Sinobome Nongoboza says her six-year-old daughter’s symptoms developed rapidly.
“She had blisters on the hand, right here in the palm and on the feet as well on the bums, the elbows, and also in the mouth. And it was very painful because she couldn’t sit, she couldn’t even hold a spoon. I had to feed her. Ja, it was really painful for her. She even cried when she had to sleep.”
