Joburg residents urged to be on high alert amid heavy rain

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) has urged residents especially those in informal settlements to remain vigilant as the risk of disruptive rain and localised flooding increases in Gauteng.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level five warning for severe thunderstorms expected over the central and eastern parts of the country.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says, “This disruptive rain might cause flash floods in low-lying areas, particularly informal settlements. Residents are urged to avoid crossing river streams during their daily activities and instead use designated pedestrian crossings. Motorists should also exercise caution while driving.”
