CWU warns of imminent collapse of SA Post Office by end of February

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has warned that there is a ‘huge possibility’ that the South African Post Office (SAPO) may cease functioning at the end of this month.

The union says if the postal service company does not receive the additional R3.8 billion in funding promised by government, SAPO’s cash reserves will run out. In a statement, the CWU has expressed concern about the ability to pay salaries and sustain operations amid efforts to create a modern and sustainable post office.

Reacting to the latest sitting of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies, the Union’s Nathen Bowers says blaming the business rescue practitioners does not tell the full story.

“Firstly, they must ensure they negotiate with the business rescue practitioner in terms of how this R3.8 billion will be allocated so that we do not stop functioning as a post office by the end of this month, which is a huge possibility.
