Students inside lecture hall
There is a high demand for placements as the 2025 academic year at institutions of higher learning is set to start.
Ahmed Essop, a research associate at the Ali Mazrui Centre for Higher Education Studies, says there are reports that demand is thirty times higher than in previous years.
He says a proactive approach is needed to remedy the situation.
“This year, the matric pass rate was much higher, it went up by 5 or 6 % the number of students passing with the university entrance pass. There are many more students who applied and did not get placed at university. There is no easy solution to this problem, part of it is that we have 26 universities in the country and unlike schools, we do not have universities in every area. The problem will move into the future until we find an alternative to tertiary education.”
