Build One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane in Parliament.
Build One South Africa (BOSA)) says it is time for the Basic Education Department to do away with the 30% pass mark for grade 12 learners.
BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane says the party has received a petition of more than 20 000 signatures from people who he says, are dissatisfied with the current pass mark.
“We have a low university admission rate. Just 47% of the learners achieved a Bachelor’s Pass, which means that when you assess, the Department of Basic Education likes to boldly say there is no such thing as a 30% pass but the national senior certificate requires that a learner passes at least three subjects at 30%. So, this idea that there is no 30% is fictitious.”

Maimane says the 30% pass rate does not prepare learners to be ready for employment after school.
He says some learners have signed the petition.
“I am joined by learners who have been through the system. I am joined by citizens who say to themselves, surely when you look to the context of education, yes those who wrote this number that we put forward, 87% of them pass as the Minister of Basic Education purports. But does it mean all the learners who started school today, we have learners who are eligible for places of work?
