Defence counsel consults with the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial.
The High Court in Pretoria will convene a special sitting on Wednesday in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial for accused number one – Muzi Sibiya – to confirm his new lawyer.
This follows the death of Sibiya’s legal representative Thulani Mngomezulu in December. Mngomezulu died in hospital.
Sibiya and four others are currently on trial for the 2014 murder of the soccer star.

Legal analyst Ulrich Roux says if Sibiya chooses one of the other defence lawyers, there cannot be a conflict of interest.
“In this instance, it makes sense for him to brief one of the other attorneys who is on record for one of the other accused given that they would be familiar with everything that has happened and so far, placed on record and all the evidence that has been led and that will hopefully not cause any further delays in the matter. The further difficulty with that is of course there can be no conflict of interest so if his version differs from the accused person whose legal representative, he decides to appoint then that can cause some difficulty.”
