Tourism authorities in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands region say the festive season has been a huge success. They have seen an unprecedented surge in tourism, with hotels and accommodation establishments operating at full occupancy throughout the season.

Adding that the strong demand underscores the growing popularity of the area as a sought-after destination for both local and international travellers.

The Midlands, a picturesque region in KwaZulu-Natal, is nestled between the Drakensberg mountains to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east.

The Midlands Meander is a collection of arranged tourist routes in the region that offers breathtaking landscapes, outstanding accommodation, renowned restaurants, adventure activities and unique art and craft galleries, amongst a host of other activities.

The local tourism sector says the festive season period has significantly stimulated the growth of establishments, which have been fully booked since the start of December.

And its also a boost to the local economy through increased revenue for businesses with local and international visitors flocking to the area.

Chairperson of Umngeni Tourism Victoria O’Sullivan talks about how well the area has done. She says there have been several international tourists from all over the world, which will be good for the local economy. “Many people who are in the arts sector and crafts are benefiting and says the establishments are all full.”

If you are looking for an exhilarating and unique adventure amidst stunning natural beauty, adrenaline junkies will enjoy a zipline taking them through the Karkloof Forest.

The canopy of towering trees offers unique views of the valley below.

Kai Schulz of Karkloof Canopy Tours says, “They had fires that destroyed some trees… and that this season is good and they set a target and exceeded it.”

Holidaymakers say the tour also brought them closer to nature.

One of them says, “We chose the Midlands because of its beauty, we wanted to get away from the city, and the canopy tours have been fantastic.”

Another says that she wanted to spend her birthday in nature, adding that the Midlands is tranquil and that there’s a lot to do. It is family orientated too.”

Other tourists opted for scenic hikes. “I chose the Midlands over the beach. I often hike, and it’s therapeutic. It brings me closer to nature and the beauty of the mountains and the valleys,” describes this tourist.

“I wanted to start my 2025 healthier, both mentally and physically, so the Midlands has that calming effect, hence I decided to spend my holidays hiking surrounded by nature,” adds another tourist.

Another drawcard is the various art exhibits, the Meander is a haven for art enthusiasts including international art lovers.

Housed in the historic Lion’s River railway station, the Platform Gallery offers a diverse collection of contemporary South African art, with a strong emphasis on local talent.

Glen Du Preez of Platform Gallery says that 80% of the artwork is by local artists, ranging in age from 20 to much older. He says that most of the artwork is sold internationally and that the gallery did very well over the festive period, selling many pieces.

International tourists say they are thrilled with their visit to the Midlands. There’s something for every taste – including a chocolate factory, a nougat shop, and a variety of eateries.

The tourism sector aims to position the area as a leading travel destination whilst also becoming a major contributor to South Africa’s economy.
