The Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta wants a 17-year-old boy alleged to have fathered a baby with a 12-year-old girl to face prosecution for statutory rape.
This after the MEC revealed that her department has identified the baby’s 17-year-old father.
The birth took place at the frontier hospital in Komani on New Year’s Day and was detected while the provincial Health MEC was doing the rounds for New Year’s births.
Eastern Cape Social Development spokesperson, Mphumzi Zuzi, says the MEC is standing firm on her stance.
“I can confirm that the MEC’s stance is not changing. If you look at the criminal law as amended, it states categorically clear that even 17-year-old, any person involved in sexual, whether its consent, with a minor should face criminal charges.”
