Alcohol plays significant role in GBV: Study

A joint study conducted by the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance and the South African Medical Research Council has revealed that alcohol plays a significant role in Gender-based Violence.

The study highlights the urgent need to address the matter.

It comes as South Africa marks 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.

The Deputy Director and COO at the South African Medical Research Councils Centre for Health Economics, Professor Susan Goldstein, says although the study was conducted in Ga-Rankuwa outside Pretoria, it represents what happens in most densely populated communities where alcohol outlets are unlicenced.

“What is important is that we’ve known for years that there has been an association between alcohol and Gender Based Violence and most people who live in any densely populated communities understand that very clearly. However, we haven’t been able to show it and prove to the powers that lead that this is something important.”

Goldstein adds: “So we did a study looking at how many outlets are in some communities and looked at the relationship between that and Gender-based Violence and what we found was quite shocking, there’s a high rate of Gender-based Violence.”
