A general view of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands, December 9, 2019.
The Presidency says South Africa has until November 2027 to respond to Israel’s legal filing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its genocide case over Gaza.
The ICJ has set deadlines for the next phase of the case, after Israel submitted its written defence in March.
South Africa says it will also respond to Israel’s objections to the court’s jurisdiction.
The Presidency maintains that self-defence cannot be used as a defence against genocide allegations.
It adds that Israel remains bound by the ICJ’s provisional orders, including measures aimed at protecting Palestinians in Gaza and ensuring humanitarian aid access.
