Deputy of Water and Sanitation Minister Sello Seitlholo has criticised Kai !Garib Local Municipality in the Northern Cape for failing to improve water and sanitation services despite repeated interventions by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
Seitlholo visited the Municipality on Friday after the latest Blue Drop and Green Drop assessments showed a sharp decline in water and wastewater management.
According to DWS, the municipality’s water and sanitation systems are in a critical state, with sewage overflows and ageing infrastructure posing health and environmental risks in Kakamas, Keimoes, Kenhardt and Vredesvallei.
The department says it has invested more than R19 million in water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades, but concerns remain over the municipality’s failure to implement corrective measures.
Seitlholo has ordered the municipality to submit a corrective action plan by the end of June.
Seitlholo says, “Water and sanitation services in Kai !Garib Municipality have reached a critical state.”
