Two KZN officers arrested for demanding R1 000 from suspect

Two police officers have been arrested on corruption charges after allegedly demanding R1 000 from a suspect as bail money ahead of his court appearance in Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal police said the officers were arrested by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit after the suspect, who was later released by the court, enquired about his bail money.

The suspect was advised to open a corruption case, which led to an investigation.

Police spokesperson Paul Magwaza said one of the officers later attempted to return the money and have the case withdrawn.

“On Friday, 22 May 2026, one of the police officers proceeded to the complainant’s workplace to pay back the R1 000 and asked him to withdraw the corruption case against him and his colleague. The complainant refused to take the money from the police officer. The Provincial Anti-Corruption members arrested the two officers and charged them with corruption,” Magwaza said.
