The Border Management Authority says it has intercepted a drug consignment worth nearly R1-billion at the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Dr Mike Masiapato, says not all trucks are screened at border posts.
Masiapato was explaining how a truck from Malawi with a drug consignment worth R1 billion passed undetected on the Zimbabwean side of the Beitbridge border post in Musina. The truck was intercepted once it reached the South African side of the border. He was speaking during a press briefing at Beitbridge on Thursday.

“The missing aspect, also from their side, is the same reality that we do not necessarily do a hundred percent screen for all trucks. It is not only a South African issue but also an African and global issue. So, on that basis, it is very much possible to miss something of that magnitude and of that nature. So I suppose that is what happened in this particular instance.”
