Constable faces attempted murder charges in a Port St John court

A 24-year-old police constable is expected to appear in the Port St John Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

The officer, who is based at the Majola Police Station, allegedly stabbed two men and stole two vehicles during separate incidents over the weekend.

Police say the victims later went to the station to discuss damages when the constable allegedly opened fire, wounding the Acting Station Commander.

The suspect was later arrested following a shoot-out with fellow officers.

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says, “The suspect fled into the bushes but was later arrested. The Constable faces charges including attempted murder (4 counts), theft of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and charges relating to the weekend stabbings and vehicle thefts. The suspect will appear at the Port St John’s Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 May 2026.”

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Vuyisile Ncata has condemned the incident.

“This conduct is criminal and a betrayal of the SAPS uniform.”
