IEC launches 2026 LGE campaign to boost voter confidence

The Electoral Commission of South Africa will officially launch its communications campaign this Wednesday for the Local Government Elections scheduled for November 4.

The campaign is expected to outline the commission’s readiness to hold the elections and raise awareness around key aspects of the electoral process.

The IEC says the campaign also aims to generate public interest in the elections at a time when confidence in democracy remains low.

According to a recent survey commissioned by the Human Sciences Research Council, only 17 percent of citizens say they are interested in voting in the upcoming elections, while just 36 percent prefer democracy as a system of governance.

IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Shiburi says the campaign seeks to encourage disillusioned voters to continue participating in democratic processes.

“We will launch the campaign for this election, including the creatives that underpin it. At the heart of that campaign is an attempt for the Commission to contribute to rekindling belief in democracy, as still a preferred way of arranging public affairs. We hope that with that campaign, we will influence voters that are disillusioned to still believe in voting, as a preferred way of arranging public affairs. That will be a contribution, but it must be met also by the substantive elements of democracy. It must be met by visible, responsive government, visible, responsive service to the party, because that is the only thing that will change voter behaviour,” says Shiburi.
