Three accused appear as Magaqa murder trial begins


The trial of three people accused of murdering former African National Congress Youth League Secretary-General Sindiso Magaqa is expected to begin in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Monday.

Magaqa was killed in 2017 after allegedly raising concerns about the use of municipal funds to refurbish a memorial hall in the uMzimkhulu Local Municipality.

The matter has been set down from 18 May until 12 June 2026.

The accused are former uMzimkhulu municipal manager Zweliphansi Stanley Skhosana, Sbonelo Myeza and Mbulelo Mpofana.

Skhosana remains in custody, while Myeza and Mpofana are out on bail.

The three face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The case is expected to focus on the circumstances surrounding Magaqa’s killing and the events leading up to the shooting.
