Taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni, co-accused in court over extortion charges

The bail application of prominent Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni and his three co-accused is expected to continue in the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Sibanyoni, Daniel Masilela, Phillimon Msiza and Oupa Sindane face charges of extortion and money laundering.

All four indicated that they intended to plead not guilty when they appeared in court on Friday.

While all four accused maintain their innocence, the State is opposing bail, arguing, among others, that Oupa Sindane attempted to flee and only surrendered after police tracked his movements.

However, his defence team insists he voluntarily handed himself over to the authorities.

The courtroom is expected to be filled with members of the media, police officers, and family members of the accused as proceedings continue. The investigating officer is expected to take the stand this morning when the bail application resumes.
