Defence calls Col Mahlangu as witness over Ntanzi’s detention in 2020

The defence, in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, has called Bongani Ntanzi’s fifth witness, Police Colonel Michael Mahlangu to testify about Ntanzi’s detention at the Pretoria North police station on the 16th of June 2020.

Mahlangu claims that there is an error in the occurrence book entry relating to a cell inspection, saying he was not assigned to visit the cells that day.

Ntanzi and four others are on trial for the 2014 murder of soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot and killed at singer Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

The case has been postponed to Monday for the State to provide the detention register from Pretoria North police station for cross-examination.

Ramosepele: “Now warrant officer … there is an error in the entry of serial number 468 at 2300, the cells and then it reads, cells visited by Warrant Officer Masilela and Warrant Officer Mahlangu, who counted 303 in brackets, awaiting trials. In custody, 20 males, in cell number 9, and one cell female, in cell number 6. No complaints.”

Mahlangu: “Yes your Worship, it is an error that they put my name. I didn’t visit the cells. I didn’t go there. The person that he was accompanied was the relief commander.”
