ANC confident KZN reshuffle won’t hurt election prospects

The African National Congress (ANC) says recent leadership changes in KwaZulu-Natal will not weaken its prospects ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.

Earlier this month, veteran politician Jeff Radebe was removed as provincial convenor and replaced by Mike Mabuyakhulu.

The party’s National Executive Committee, led by Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, is currently engaging with the newly-appointed provincial leadership to stabilise structures and map out the way forward.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, ANC Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu says the party is not scrambling, but instead working to rebuild confidence and improve its standing in the province ahead of the polls.

“Honest assessment, we know that we have had a challenges here, and if you look at the electoral outcome, but we also know that as the ANC this is not the first time that the ANC has faced difficulties in the province of KwaZulu Natal. We continue to be confident of the work we are doing to regain ground and be consistent with the Constitution of the ANC. We are not scrambling for anything, we are building the organisation; we are rebuilding the organisation.”
