Diepkloof electricity cut was for non-payment, not outage: Eskom

Eskom says there is no power outage at Diepkloof hostel in Soweto, but that electricity was disconnected due to non-payment. The clarification comes amid rising tensions, with residents complaining of a prolonged power cut in the area which is impacting daily lives.

The residents say they have had no electricity since Monday.

Eskom’s Gauteng spokesperson Amanda Qithi says customers know who supplies them with electricity.

“So, let’s talk about Diepkloof, the hostel particularly and all the five hostels in Soweto, they are supplied by Eskom. So if there is an outage there, we as Eskom would be the one that communicates with the customers, and we would be the ones that are held liable. I think if you are somebody who is buying electricity and you are paying for electricity, you would know who supplies you with electricity, therefore, if there is an outage, we would communicate to those affected customers and also use social media.”
