Pirates, Chiefs set for second Soweto Derby showdown

South African football giants Orlando Pirates will take on Kaizer Chiefs in the second Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

It’s the rivals’ second match of the Betway Premiership season.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has warned motorists to brace for heavy traffic and delays around the stadium in Nasrec.

It has advised football fans that the Soweto Highway, between Mentz Street and the N1 North on-ramp, is closed.


Crownwood Road and Booysens Reserve are also closed. Kickoff is set at 3PM.

JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla says, “It’s all hands on deck and the systems go for today’s derby. Road closures will be implemented on Soweto Highway that’s between Booysens and Diepkloof and also on Booysen Reserve Road between Crownwood Road in Ormonde and Nasrec Road right next to the stadium. And then we’ll have a contraflow traffic management system that will be implemented on Nasrec Road that will have three designated lanes towards the stadium; before the game and after the game that will be converted into four lanes into a one-way system.”
