Bheki Cele accused of interfering in police investigations

The former Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has been accused of interfering with police investigations and attempting to use state resources for political gain.

In a media briefing at Mbombela, the suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner, Daphney Manamela, claimed that among the cases Cele interfered with was the murder of Hillary Gardee, who was the daughter of Economic Freedom Fighters Deputy President, Godrich Gardee.

Manamela also says she became a target after disregarding Cele’s instruction to have the former African National Congress Provincial Treasurer, Mandla Msibi, who was the Cogta MEC, arrested during the ANC January 8 event in Mbombela in 2024.

“The former Minister of Police, Minister Cele, wanted the former MEC of Cogta arrested during the Mpumalanga January 8. Minister Cele got upset as I differed with the instruction without evidence. Eventually, he insisted to utilize the police chopper wearing the political party regalia, which was wrong. At the time he was representing the political party,” says Manamela.
