Mabuyane to file lawsuit against Malema over degree remarks

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane intends to file a lawsuit against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema over his remarks that he fraudulently obtained a master’s degree from the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape.

Malema made the remarks while addressing his party supporters and members outside the KuGompo City Regional Court where he was sentenced to a five-year jail term.

He has since been granted leave to appeal his sentence and released on warning.

Premier Mabuyane’s Spokesperson, Sonwabo Mbananga, says the allegations are false and baseless.

“It is deeply irresponsible to paddle misinformation while he himself faces serious legal consequences. South Africa has a democratic constitution no one is above the law, and no one should weaponise falsehoods for political gain. The premier has instructed his legal team to explore appropriate legal action against these defamatory remarks. Premier Mabuyane remains focused on serving the people of the Eastern Cape and will not be distracted by political theatrics,” Mbananga.
