Modack named ex-top cops in corruption claims: Witness

A witness in the trial of alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, testified that the accused informed him that two former top cops, Jeremy Vearey and Charl Kinnear were involved in corruption.

Police Captain Alfred Benjamin Barker, who worked for Crime Intelligence, continued with his testimony in the Western Cape High Court.

Modack, along with 14 co-accused, face more than 100 charges, including the 2020 murder of Kinnear.

According to Barker, who engaged with Modack and took statements from him while he was detained at Pollsmor Prison in 2018, the accused laid complaints against senior police officers.

The complaints emanate from the payments allegedly made by Modack to Veary and Kinnear through an informant by the name of Mohamedaly Hanware, in order for him to get his firearms that were seized.

Barker explains, “At one stage, Mr. Modack contacted me … also that was before this incident of the 1st of September 2018 when I took the photos that I was informed that Mr. Hamware is actually an informant of Captain Jafta … so it would have been difficult for me to actually engage with him in terms of obtaining any statement.”
