Delegates pay tribute to outgoing DA leader Steenhuisen

The over 2 000 delegates, attending the Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Congress in Midrand north of Johannesburg, have paid tribute and bid farewell to the party’s outgoing Federal Leader John Steenhuisen.

The two-day gathering is expected to elect new leaders and adopt a raft of some policy proposals.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is tipped to take over as the new Federal Leader while Helen Zille’s Federal Chairperson position is also up for grabs.

Paying tribute to Steenhuisen, DA MP Dean Macpherson says he leaves behind a great legacy of building the party that was on the brink of fading away.

‘Political landscape shifting’

Steenhuisen says South Africa is entering a defining moment in its democratic history, a moment when the political landscape is shifting and when millions of citizens are beginning to see the real possibility of change.

Steenhuisen, who is not seeking re-election, describes the party as the generation that changed history.
