Artemis II crew safely returns to Earth

The four astronauts on board the Artemis Two Orion capsule are relieved to have returned to Earth safely.

The capsule splashed into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

This is after being in space for ten days.

After floating in space for the last ten days, orbiting both the earth and the moon, the history-making crew are back home after splashing into the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of San Diego.

This comes after a test flight supporting subsequent Artemis missions aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface and subsequently to adventure towards Mars.

A fireball protected by a heat shield re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere, a moment regarded as the most dangerous part of the mission.

By the time they returned to Earth, the Artemis II crew had travelled a total distance of over 1 million km on a journey that set the stage for further missions to outer space.

The US Navy was on hand to transport the crew on a vessel where they were expected to immediately undergo intense health checks after their gravitational return to earth.
