Unemployed teachers to march to KZN education department offices

Around 700 teachers are expected to march to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education offices in Pietermaritzburg this morning, demanding employment.

The march will start at Langalibalele Street in the KZN Capital City and move to the education department’s offices, where the marchers are expected to hand over their grievances.

Some of these teachers, who have been without work for more than ten years, are qualified to teach critical subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Geography.

They are blaming the provincial education department for not having a transparent database and employing people who have just received their qualifications.

One of the unemployed teachers, Mbali Duma, is demanding answers from the department.

“We are qualified educators, we are ready to teach learners, and there are schools without educators; there is a shortage of teachers. Why are we not hired by the Department of Education? We want answers from the department. What is delaying them? Why are we still sitting at home, not being employed?”

“We don’t have the money to bribe people to give us jobs. We are depending on them to hire us. So the database isn’t transparent; we can’t see which schools have vacancies. We are on the database, why are we not being hired as the educators?” she added.
