Western Cape records 19 deaths over Easter weekend

The Western Cape Department of Mobility says 19 people have lost their lives on the province’s roads over the Easter weekend compared to the 22 fatalities during the same period last year.

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, says this is a 14% drop in road deaths this year.

Sileku says 108 motorists had been arrested for driving under the influence.

He says over 40 000 vehicles were stopped and checked.

“I am encouraged by the stronger and visible traffic law enforcement and the better behaviour by most road users. Our traffic officers were highly active and also acted firmly against reckless behaviour however, we remain deeply concerned that 19 people still lost their lives. This reminds us that road safety is a shared responsibility.”
