Dunga appointment splits opinion, SANCO wants Lesufi to resign

The appointment of EFF provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga as Gauteng Finance MEC has drawn mixed reactions from political parties and organisations.

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in Gauteng has criticised the move, raising concerns about governance and accountability.

Dunga previously served as Ekurhuleni MMC for Finance but was dismissed after allegations of mismanagement of funds and misconduct. At the time, Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza cited leadership concerns and the city’s financial challenges.

SANCO Gauteng chairperson Abraham Mashishi says the appointment undermines public trust.

“We encourage people to vote for the African National Congress, and we promise them to be the watchdog, not to be biased towards our people. Corruption, our people are sick and tired of corruption, and we cannot allow this reshuffle to happen where the person who does not have integrity, the person whose integrity is questionable, is being given such a huge responsibility, R170 billion budget to the EFF. So there is something fishy there. So, for example, we are saying enough is enough, we are not going to allow things to threaten anymore,” said Mashishi.

SANCO in Gauteng rejects Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s recent cabinet reshuffle

SANCO has also called for the resignation of Premier Panyaza Lesufi, describing the reshuffle as an insult to residents.

“This decision is a direct betrayal of the democratic will of the people, where electoral strength is blatantly ignored in favour of backroom deals and elite arrangements. It exposes a leadership that is desperate to cling to power at any cost, even if it means auctioning off key departments to politically convenient partners with no real mandate from the people. Such reckless political bargaining undermines the credibility of government, erodes public trust, and confirms that Gauteng is being governed through opportunism, patronage and desperation, not principle or competence,” Mashishi added.

The EFF has defended Dunga’s appointment, saying it will contribute to stabilising the province’s finances.

The reshuffle was announced by Premier Lesufi last week.
