Police captain arrested for alleged fraud worth millions

A 53-year-old police captain has been arrested for allegedly defrauding the police’s Protection and Security Services division of millions of rand.

The arrest follows an internal investigation into suspicious transactions, which revealed the officer allegedly manipulated the system to withdraw millions of funds meant for the presidential protection services.

He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of fraud.

The captain was on suspension following the investigation.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says no corruption will be tolerated within SAPS ranks.

“The National Commissioner of SAPS has welcomed the arrest and says any member found engaging in corrupt activities will face the full might of the law. There will be no exceptions nor compromise. Accountability is not optional, it us a fundamental pillar of our service.”
