SANCO demands Lesufi resign after Dunga’s appointment

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in Gauteng has called for the immediate resignation of Premier Panyaza Lesufi over his recent cabinet reshuffle.

Last week, Lesufi reshuffled his executive committee in which the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Provincial Chairperson, Nkululeko Dunga, was appointed Finance MEC.

SANCO has criticised the appointment of Dunga.

Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakazi had fired him as the City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee on Finance, last year.

Xhakazi had cited a lack of leadership, absenteeism and the need to rectify the city’s dire financial position as some of the reasons.

SANCO Gauteng Chairperson, Abram Mashishi, says the reshuffle is an insult to Gauteng residents and an attack on the alliance.

“This decision is a direct betrayal of the democratic will of the people, where electoral strength is blatantly ignored in favour of backroom deals and elite arrangements,” says Mashishi.

He says it exposes a leadership that is desperate to cling to power at any cost, even if it means auctioning off key departments to politically convenient partners with no real mandate from the people.

“Such reckless political bargaining undermines the credibility of government, erodes public trust, and confirms that Gauteng is being governed through opportunism, patronage and desperation, (and) not principle or competence,” he adds.
