The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape is yet to confirm when the Deputy Mayor of the Bitou Municipality in Plettenberg Bay in Garden Route area will appear in court.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has formally charged Nokuzola Kolwapi.
In a video that went viral in December last year, she is seen firing a gun in public.
Action SA’s Garden Route chairperson, Patrick Fepiwe, says Kolwapi must be held accountable.
“Well, as ActionSA, we welcome this decision taken by DPP because this decision suggests that no one in SA is above the law. As Action SA, we are very clear, we advocating for clear and transparent government and this speaks clearly to our pillars as Action SA,” says Fepiwe.
In another video, also in December, the deputy mayor could be seen handing the weapon to her bodyguard after firing several shot. The initial video had shown Kolwapi shooting into the air to celebrate her son’s homecoming ceremony in KwaNokuthula following his initiation.
In a statement, Kolwapi said no firearm was present and that it was a toy gun.
